Neue Technologien wie E-Mobilität, Windenergieerzeugung und die Einführung neuer umweltfreundlicher Schmierstoffe als Mittel zur Verbesserung der Energieeffizienz führen zu drastisch veränderten Bedingungen in tribologischen Anwendungen.

Es werden daher neue Werkstoffe und Beschichtungen benötigt, die den geänderten tribologischen Bedingungen gerecht werden und gleichzeitig für extrem niedrige Reibung und Verschleiß sorgen. Die schnellen Veränderungen in industriellen Anwendungen lassen keinen Raum für Trial-and-Error-Lösungen und erfordern ein tiefes Verständnis der zugrunde liegenden mikroskopischen Mechanismen im tribologischen Kontakt.

Das European Symposium on Friction, Wear and Wear Protection konzentriert sich auf die neuesten Entwicklungen in der Material- und Beschichtungsentwicklung für ultraniedrige Reibung und Verschleiß sowie auf Reibmaterialien, Polymere und PMCs. Das Symposium wird seit 2008 alle drei Jahre unter der wissenschaftlichen Begleitung des Fachausschusses Verhalten von Werkstoffen unter mechanischer Beanspruchung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Materialkunde, DGM, durchgeführt.
