AI and Augmented Reality: Use Cases in Manufacturing

In today’s industrial landscape, the combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) is a crucial factor for efficiency and competitiveness. How are these technologies shaping the future of production – and accelerating progress? "The integration of AI and AR enables companies to optimize complex processes while ensuring product quality," explains Salt and Pepper Business Unit Director, Thorsten Wujek. "The potential of these technologies is especially evident in the manufacturing industry."

An Application Example: Bicycle assembly, where different screws require specific torque levels. With an AI-AR system, workers receive essential information directly in their field of view. Warnings help prevent errors, for instance by locking the torque wrench if an incorrect torque level is about to be applied. Additionally, AI-AR systems are used for the final inspection of weld seams in steel construction, as well as for surface inspections in the yacht and aviation industries. They support employees with step-by-step instructions and visual cues to identify critical points.

"Our solutions are especially valuable in areas affected by a shortage of skilled workers or potential loss of expertise," emphasizes Wujek. "By providing direct feedback and support to less experienced employees, we can elevate them to expert level more quickly."
