Lorch Schweißtechnik has added a push-pull function to its iQS series. The power sources are now able to operate torches with dedicated slave motors that actively control the wire feed at the front, allowing the operation of systems with torch hose packages up to eight metres in length. This increases the welders’ working range, benefiting industries with particularly large parts, such as container and tank construction, rail vehicle and wagon manufacturing, shipbuilding and shipyard construction, as well as vehicle, metal and system engineering. Wire materials like aluminium can now also be welded with the iQS over long feed distances. The application covers both manual welding and use with cobots.
Precise control of the push-pull motor combination via the iQS
This is made possible by the iQS system controlling and synchronising the two motors. Lorch has redesigned the control technology for the wire feed entirely specifically for this purpose: The system measures the wire feed speed, continuously compares the setpoint to the actual value, and corrects any deviations that occur, achieving a particularly stable arc and a process with reliably repeatable results. This is particularly essential in industrial manufacturing, where every component must reach the same quality. “We consider the push-pull option to be a logical, comprehensible extension of the modular system built around the iQS. It gives our customers a new dimension of process quality,” says Jonas Kappel, Head of Product Management & Marketing & Torch Development at Lorch.
A torch with the central connection
This function can be used for the LMG-PP and LMW-PP Powermaster Pro torches redesigned by Lorch specifically for iQS operation. They now feature the Lorch central connection for direct connection to an iQS. Individual adjustments and time-consuming cutting to length can be replaced by a single click to lock the torch automatically and let it communicate with the system via CAN bus. At the same time, Lorch has redesigned the torch to render its drive system significantly more robust. A continuous brass-to-brass connection in the drive is better at holding up against the thermal stress of long-term operation to keep the torch in productive use for longer before maintenance is required.
Operation of the LMS torch has been integrated as well: The welder can access welding parameters and the job memory immediately at the hand piece via the Powermaster Pro remote-control technology. An OLED graphic display replaces the previously used seven-segment display. The menu navigation and parameter display considerably improve in clarity as a result, which is of advantage for welders standing eight metres away from the workpiece or working inside of a container that prevents direct view of the power source. The torch is available air- or water-cooled; the latter version covers power ranges of up to 450 amps at 100 % duty cycle with mixed gas. The torch neck rotates and can be swapped.
A modular system to grow
The iQS is Lorch’s series for industrial use. Configuration options are continually increased, with Lorch developing new processes via the iQS Smart Process Control Engine and making them available by way of remote updates. SpeedWave is one example of these new processes: it stands out in the welding of aluminium and can be combined into an overall package with the push-pull torch.
Also available for cobot applications
Lorch offers a dedicated push-pull version for integration into the iQS cobot solution using the Lorch central connection for automatic applications. Stable wire feeding forms a particular challenge in automation due to the torch rotating around its own axis in a process where even small movements can make the arc unstable. A consistent feed ensures reproducible results at high repeatability, even when feed distances are long or in aluminium applications. This is another new member of the Lorch Cobot Welding World product family.
