European Wind Manufacturers Standardise Automated and Integrated Metrology

As offshore wind structures scale into megastructures and Far East competition threatens European market share, traditional manual quality assurance has become a critical-path bottleneck. By transitioning from fragmented, manual inspection tools to a standardised, automated metrology ecosystem across towers, transition pieces (TPs) and monopiles, European fabricators can execute inspections 5 to 10 times faster - building total quality confidence directly into high-speed serial production.

The global offshore wind sector is scaling rapidly. As wind turbines expand in capacity, their underlying steel structures – towers, transition pieces (TPs) and monopiles – have grown into megastructures that push traditional manufacturing to its limits. Concurrently, European fabricators face tight margins, aggressive timelines and rising low-cost overseas competition. To defend their market leadership, manufacturers must build peak operational efficiency and total quality confidence directly into their serial production lines.

Achieving this requires rethinking quality assurance. For years, inspection time in heavy fabrication have remained necessary bottlenecks: manual, slow and fragmented across disparate vendors. Argon Measuring Solutions is changing this paradigm. As a metrology partner capable of delivering automated, end-to-end inspection solutions across all three core structural assets – towers, TPs and monopiles – Argon enables manufacturers to execute inspections 5 to 10 times faster while establishing a standardised, future-proof quality workflow across the entire shop floor.

Combining automated and scalable SMS systems

Shopfloor Measurement Solutions (SMS) is engineered around five core building blocks. It starts from hardware in the form of (1) 3D continuous measurement technology (e.g. Hexagon ATS600 laser tracker) and (2) 3D metrology software (e.g. Metrologic Metrolog X4). Around that, Argon adds (3) its proprietary mobility solutions and tooling and (4) its own software interfaces and scripts that tie everything together. Overall, (5) services & support are provided. The fully integrated SMS allows operators to follow clear, template-guided instructions while sophisticated measurement logic is executed in the background. By integrating Flangescan, Weldscan and Canscan under this unified SMS framework, quality inspection shifts from a traditional post-production bottleneck into a core production driver. This brings increased productivity, enhanced shop-floor safety and quality control.

The industrial reality: High volumes, vanishing margins and the critical path

The economic reality for wind turbine structure manufacturers varies significantly by component type, but the underlying challenge remains identical: manual inspection is eating production time.
