Sound weld of two steel plates

In several applications, as for naval, infrastructure and construction sectors, welding of thick plates has become critical. The common techniques involve several passes and/or slow welding processes.

These techniques are time and material consuming and complicated. To overcome the above, Castellini proposes a hybrid laser-arc welding technique in a configuration which allowed them to achieve a sound weld of two steel plates, 20 mm thick, in a single pass. The key point is that the welds have been performed in a simple butt configuration, without any chamfer or additional preparation. The process has been designed to be applied on long welding paths, granting an easy implementation on any industrial production. These results open the way to a faster, more reliable and less costly process for high thickness welding.
