Meet Derik Bartel, an emerging welder carving out a career in a trade that is often underestimated but indispensable. In this interview, he explains which factors he believes are crucial for professional success and why he has developed a passion for welding.
How did you get into welding and what fascinated you most about this profession?
Derik Bartel: I got into welding because I have always been fascinated by the combination of craftsmanship and technical precision. What I find particularly exciting is that welding allows you to transform individual metal parts into something durable and resilient.
What motivates you most about working with metal and welding technology?
The versatility of the materials and processes motivates me. Every project brings new demands for accuracy, technique and creativity. I also enjoy that welding is a field where you are constantly learning – whether it’s new welding methods, modern materials, or innovative automation solutions.
Is there a project or moment you are particularly proud of?
One moment I am especially proud of was a project where I successfully executed a complex welded structure requiring the highest precision. The result was not only technically flawless but also received particular praise from both the team and the client. Moments like this show me that attention to detail and passion really pay off.
How do you see the future of welding – what opportunities or changes excite you the most?
I see the future of welding very positively. I am especially excited about the development of automated and robot-assisted welding techniques, as well as the use of new, lighter materials. The combination of traditional craftsmanship with modern technology presents tremendous opportunities.
Who or what has influenced you most on your path as a welder?
The people who influenced me the most were my grandfather and my father. Both showed me early on how much skill, patience, and precision this profession requires.
What advice would you give to other young people considering a career in welding?
I would advise young people to develop patience and precision – two qualities that are particularly important in welding. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because that’s how you learn the most. It’s also worthwhile to stay open to new technologies and processes as welding is constantly evolving.
