Spotlight on the Next Generation of Welders: Tom Henter

We continue the interview series where we introduce young welders and learn more about their career paths, motivations and backgrounds. Today, we feature Tom Henter, who, together with his teammates from the Westphalia Regional Association, participated in the DVS national competition “Jugend schweißt” at the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN trade fair in Essen and won the gold medal for the best team performance.

How did you get into welding and what fascinated you most about this profession?

Tom Henter: During my high school years, I asked for an arc welding machine for Christmas. That’s how I got started with welding and eventually found my way into my current profession.

What motivates you most about working with metal and welding technology?

The perfect mix of heavy, hands-on work and fine, precise craftsmanship.

Is there a project or moment you are particularly proud of?

I’m proud of everything. The increasing complexity and scale of the projects make the work especially interesting.

How do you see the future of welding – what opportunities or changes excite you the most?

I’m looking forward to new technical machines, especially in CNC, production, and robotics.

Who or what has influenced you most on your path as a welder?

Definitely YouTube – I’ve learned a lot there and discovered the kinds of projects I want to work on.

What advice would you give to other young people considering a career in welding?

Just do it. Seriously, it’s amazing.

Thank you for taking the time to share your insights with us.
