The rail industry is at a pivotal moment. Manufacturers and operators are under increasing pressure to modernise fleets, improve reliability, reduce lifecycle costs, enhance passenger experiences and meet ambitious sustainability goals. At the same time, manufacturers and operators are seeking to increase manufacturing efficiency, maximise asset utilisation and keep increasingly complex rail networks running smoothly.
At InnoTrans 2026, 3M will present technologies for different stages of the rail lifecycle, including vehicle manufacturing, refurbishment, maintenance and daily operations. Under the theme "Next Stop: Success," visitors can discover technologies and application.
Key priorities in the rail industry
The solutions presented at the 3M booth focus on five areas: cost efficiency and throughput scaling, operational efficiency and predictive maintenance, fleet modernisation and digital connectivity, passenger experience and sustainability and resource efficiency. 3M combines material science, application expertise and engineering experience across applications such as thermal management, structural bonding, surface protection, lightweight construction, manufacturing optimisation, noise and vibration control, and process monitoring.
These technologies are intended to support more efficient manufacturing processes, improve operational reliability, extend asset lifecycles, reduce downtime and contribute to a more efficient use of resources.
Fleet modernisation and lifecycle extension
As operators seek to extend the service life of existing rolling stock, refurbishment and lifecycle extension are becoming increasingly important. One example is 3M Cooling Film, which is designed to reduce heat build-up inside rail vehicles. According to the company, by reducing solar heat input, the film can support passenger thermal comfort and lower the demand on cooling systems. 3M DI-NOC Anti-Graffiti Film is intended for the refurbishment and protection of interior and exterior surfaces. It can be used to renew surfaces and protect them from contamination and damage. Together with other solar-control and surface-protection technologies, 3M states that these solutions can support the refurbishment and continued use of existing rail vehicles.
Efficiency and process reliability
Furthermore the company will present technologies for manufacturing and refurbishment processes. These include 3M VHB Max and the 3M Adhesive Mix Monitor, which are designed to support assembly processes and process control. Further solutions cover sealing, fastening and noise and vibration management. According to 3M, these technologies can help manufacturers optimise processes, reduce rework and improve process visibility.
Future rail applications
Digitalisation, sustainability requirements, changing passenger expectations and the need for operational resilience are influencing the development of rail transportation. At InnoTrans 2026, 3M will present material and application technologies for these areas. The portfolio includes solutions for lightweight construction, maintenance, refurbishment and process monitoring.
