ABB Achieves CDP Rankings for Water and Climate

ABB has achieved A scores for climate and water in non-profit organization CDP’s 2025 rankings, earning a place on the annual A List for both climate change and for the first time, water stewardship. ABB joins the top 1 % of the 22,100 companies scored that achieved a double A rating. Anke Hampel, Group Head of Sustainability at ABB, said: “Inclusion in CDP’s A List for both climate and water is an important recognition of our leadership in performance and corporate transparency. Achieving an A rating for Water for the first time is testament to our strengthened focus on water-related risks exposure, water stewardship, governance as well as our enhanced supplier engagement on the topic of water risk.”

As climate change, population growth and industrial demand put further pressure on water security, ABB recognizes fresh water as a finite and shared resource and endeavors to use water responsibly throughout its value chain. The global water and wastewater industry is experiencing profound transformation, driven by increasing water scarcity, consumption, emerging technologies, and evolving regulatory landscapes. ABB is at the forefront of driving innovation along the water management cycle, adhering to high industry and regulatory standards for safe, high-quality water production, distribution and wastewater treatment.

ABB improved its water security score from a B in 2023, to an A- in 2024 and now an A in 2025. Water management at ABB is especially relevant in areas of increased water stress. ABB conducts annual assessments of water-related risk across each of its 320 global sites, focusing on sites in water-stressed regions (91 in 2024). ABB requires all of its sites in water-stressed areas to perform a self-assessment on water stewardship by the end of 2026, followed by interventions to reduce water stress. ABB encourages its sites to align with the requirements of the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS). This globally recognized framework for sustainable water management addresses responsible water use, water quality and governance at a watershed level through multistakeholder engagement.

Nelamangala site becomes first ABB site to be awarded the AWS Standard certification (Gold category) by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS)
Bengaluru, a major city in southern India, is facing severe groundwater depletion driven by rapid urbanization and excessive extraction. Recognizing these challenges, ABB’s Nelamangala site, located northwest of Bengaluru, has taken proactive steps to restore groundwater levels in the local community while recycling treated water on site. Approximately 85 percent of treated water is recycled, enabling groundwater replenishment at a rate nearly 1.25 times faster than consumption. Through comprehensive rainwater harvesting initiatives, the site has reduced surface runoff and contributed to an increase of over 30 meters in local groundwater levels over the past three years. The factory received the AWS Standard certification (Gold) in December 2025, recognizing its investments in smart water management, local innovation, and strong engagement with communities and stakeholders across the value chain. The AWS certification confirms that the site meets a globally recognized benchmark for responsible water stewardship.
