voestalpine Böhler Welding Unveils Supermartensitic Overlay Solution to Double Lifespan of Continuous Casting Rollers
voestalpine Böhler Welding has announced a groundbreaking advancement in the durability of continuous casting rollers. Through the development of a supermartensitic weld overlay, the company has successfully doubled the operational lifespan of these critical components in steel production.
Continuous casting rollers, especially those positioned immediately after the mould in the vertical section of the casting line, are subjected to extreme thermal shocks, corrosion, and hot oxidation. Traditional overlay materials often fall short in providing the necessary resistance to these harsh conditions. Addressing this challenge, voestalpine Böhler Welding introduced the WEARcore 768-S cored wire, a 12.5Cr-5Ni-2.5Mo type designed for submerged arc overlay welding. This innovative solution offers enhanced corrosion resistance while maintaining acceptable wear performance.
Extensive testing at the Dillinger Hütte steel works in Germany validated the efficacy of the WEARcore 768-S overlay. The results demonstrated a significant increase in the rollers' lifespan, effectively doubling their operational duration compared to traditional overlays. This advancement not only reduces maintenance frequency but also enhances the overall efficiency and cost-effectiveness of steel production processes.
