Workshop: Laser Processing of Non-Metals – From Fundamentals to Applications

Fraunhofer IWS will host a lunch-to-lunch event on March 18 and 19 in Dresden, Germany,  where leading researchers and industry experts will share the latest trends and innovations in laser processing of polymers and other non-metal materials. The presentations will cover a broad range of laser applications:

  • Laser ablation and cutting of polymers, textiles, stone and composites
  • Industrial laser processing of glass, wood and packaging materials
  • Laser-based joining of polymers, paper and hybrid structures
  • Surface functionalization and lightweight multi-material design
  • Customized control solutions and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

The workshop focuses on composites and aerospace applications. Contributions address laser processing of fiber-reinforced polymers and thermoplastic aerospace structures, laser-based manufacturing approaches and printed heaters for space systems. Further talks examine laser-assisted joining of polymer–metal hybrids and demonstrate how 2D laser scanning increases robustness in automated tape layout processes.

The program combines expert presentations with interactive discussions, networking sessions and a guided lab tour that showcases state-of-the-art laser technologies in operation.
