Interroll Focuses on Collaborative Automation with the iBOTone®

What is the best way to automate welding processes when production is characterized by a wide variety of product variants, small to medium-sized batches, and recurring large-scale orders? This was the challenge facing Interroll Conveyor at its Obrigheim site. The goal was to find a solution that would enable greater automation while simultaneously maintaining the flexibility required for day-to-day production operations.

Interroll found the answer in the iBOTone® collaborative welding robot from ABICOR BINZEL. Together with BIS Braun – an automation expert and strategic partner of ABICOR BINZEL for cobot and robot applications – the company developed a system featuring four independent workstations served by a single cobot. This allows the system to operate either as a rotary unit for high-volume welding or to weld daily requirement quantities at the individual stations. In this way, the cobot’s capacity is utilised optimally and it can be flexibly adapted to various production tasks.

Interroll was particularly attracted by the simple programming and the ability to produce a wide variety of components economically. “We have to be highly flexible and at the same time be able to handle small to medium-sized series,” explains Kathleen Krebs, Head of Industrial Engineering at Interroll. This is exactly why a welding cobot that works with humans is the right solution. The iBOTone® does not replace welders but rather supports them. It takes on recurring welding tasks, while the employees can use their know-how where flexibility and experience are required.

Watch the entire project from technical approval to the installation of the cobot system – featuring four welding stations – at Interroll Conveyor in this video.
