ABB ranked second top Swiss company for patent applications

With 540 patent applications, ABB has secured second place among Swiss companies in the European Patent Office’s (EPO) Patent Index 2024, jumping from fourth place in 2023. The annual list of patent applications is published by the EPO in Munich, Germany, and highlights the companies and countries with the highest number of patents across the globe.

Swiss Steel Group stays on strategic path amidst challenging market conditions

In a weak market environment, sales volume of Swiss Steel Group declined by 5.1% to 1,056 kilotons in 2024, with revenue falling by 14.3% to EUR 2,432 million. EBITDA improved to EUR –35.5 million, supported by one-time effects. Net debt decreased to EUR 711.4 million due to the April 2024 capital increase, which also raised equity to EUR 322.8 million (equity ratio: 19.3%). In early 2025, the Group secured new financing arrangements to support its strategic roadmap.

ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corporation – an integrated green hydrogen production company based in Montreal, Canada – have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement to collaborate on the development of up to 15 modular and scalable green hydrogen production facilities across North America over the next five years, providing a clean fuel source for existing hydrogen users and heavy industrial processes such as steelmaking, which currently use grey hydrogen as an energy source.
